Foel Drygarn Hillfort, 'Hill of the three cairns' is a 2,700 year old Iron Age hillfort that is crowned with three magnificent Bronze Age burial cairns that are 4,000 years old.
It is situated on the futhest east of the Preseli Hills and at 1,190 feet high can be seen from miles around. The inner defences on the summit cover approximately 3 acres, with outer defences built at a later date. Each contain single ramparts of dry stone and earth, with traces of a ditch outside the inner rampart. Within the inner defence are three stone cairns that, throughout the hillforts history, were never plundered for their stone, such was the spiritual respect each burial cairn commanded of those who dwelt there. Within the fort there are at least 227 hut platforms and in its day would have been a significant centre of popuation ruled by powerful regional leader. Early excavations unearthed Iron Age and Roman pottery and artifacts, including fine glass beads, a jet ring and even piles of sling stones in great number.
There area few options to walk up to the hillfort from the road. The one I took is located between the house of Blaen Llethr on your left and the next farm on your right, where there is a lay-by where you can park and take either of the two nearby lanes up towards the hillfort and from there follow the footpath up to the summit. Good walking boots are recommended and the climb is quite easy going. The views for the top are really quite special and is well worth the effort.
