Ormacleit Castle is a ruined mansion house of the early 18th century. It is located on South Uist in the Western Isles of Scotland.
The castle is on private land so can only be seen from the road that runs alongside it and is quite ruinous.
Definately more mansion than castle with a brief history of less than ten years!
~ History ~
1707 ~ Allan MacDonald, chief of Clan Ranold, builds himself a decrotive fortified mansion.
1715 ~ MacDonald is killed at the Battle of Sheriffmuir, upon which legend has it the castle burns down on the same day.
Following the fire the Clanranald seat moves to the neabt island of Benbecula, and the ruinous castle is abandoned forever.
