Inveruglas Castle is a ruined 16th century Z-planned tower house located on an island in Loch Lomond, and is said to have once been linked to the shore by a causeway. 

This is the oldest stronghold of Clan MacFarlane before the chief was forced to abandon it after Oliver Cromwell's forces bombarded and then torched the castle in the mid seventeenth century.

You can get a glimpse of the castle from the Loch Lomond visitors centre. 

~ History 

1225 ~ Gilchrist, the founder of Clan MacFarlane, receives a charter of the lands of Arrochar.

1300's ~ Inveruglas Castle is built on the island of Inver Douglas.

1513 ~ Sir John, 11th chief of MacFarlane, is killed at the Battle of Flodden fighting the English in the largest battle ever fought between the two Kingdoms. King James IV of Scotland is killed along with 10 Earls, 10 Lords, 34 knights and clan chieftans, and at least 12,000 men in the greatest ever defeat experinced by Scotland.

1547 ~ Duncan, 13th chief of MacFarlane, is killed at the Battle of Pinkie, the largest ever fought on Scottish soil. Once more the larger Scottish army is defeated. The English artillery proving decisive in the battle, which becomes the last fought between England and Scotland, before Union of the two crowns.

1568 ~ The MacFarlane's fight for Mary, Queen of Scots against forces in the name of her infant son King James VI. Once more the MacFarlane's find themselves on the losing side.

1570's ~ Remodelling building work is undertaken at the castle.

1577 ~ Clan MacFarlane build another castle on Loch Lomond at Eilean I Vow.

1645 ~ King Charles I's Lord Lieutenant of Scotland, James Graham 1st Marquis of Montrose, leads an ambitious and successful military campaign against the Covenanter's led by his arch enemy Archibald Campbell Marquis of Argyll. In an audacious move, Montrose leads his Highland forces, including Clan MacFarlane, across freezing snow capped mountains to surprise the Campbell army at Inverlochy Castle, where the Campbell's are routed and Archibald forced to flee and abandon his army to save his own skin.

1650's ~ Oliver Cromwell's forces attack and burn Clan MacFarlan's principle seat of Inveruglas Castle.

Following destruction of Inveruglas the Clan chief moves the MacFarlane's principle seat to Eilean I Vow castle further up Loch Lomond.
