An Sean Dun is a well preserved Iron Age dun located on a defensive ridge with spectacular views within site of Dun Ara Castle on the coast, and a wonderful woodland walk from Glengorm Castle. The remains of the dun are almost 30 feet in diameter with dry stone walls up to 3 feet thick. A gap in the inner face of the dun appears to be an entrance to a stair and there is also evidence of an internal wall. The entrance to the dun on the east side was protected by an outerwork running from the cliff edge. There are some similarities to a broch, but the internal walls would not support such a high tower like structure and lack the mural gallery and guard cells associated with a true broch. It is difficult to assess how high the walls would have once stood, but it would have looked truely commanding and impressive in its day as the centre of power over the local farming communities.
To get to this magnificent site park at Glengorm castle and take the footpath that takes in glorious scenery, passing a set of standing stones, thet serve as an ancient signpost, as taking the right-hand path takes you eventually to Dun Ara Castle, which was also first built in the Iron age, or take the left-hand path towards the woords, and eventally to An Sean Dun.
For me I took the path to Dun Ara Castle and from here headed from the coast inland, up across rough terrain towards the tree-line which shields An Sean Dun, in a glorious circular walk that eventually leads you back to the standing stones and Glengorm castle. A fabulous adventure that requires good walking boots.
