Kames Castle is a 14th century castellated mansion house on the Isle of Bute, Scotland. It was once surrounded by a moat
It is located on the shore of Kames Bay near Port Bannatyne.
Originally the seat of the Bannatyne family, Kames is one of the oldest continuously inhabited houses in Scotland.
The grounds are strictly private but can be seen from the road and is a short distance from the more impressive Wester Kames Castle.
~ History ~
1314 ~ Following the Battle of Bannockburn, Robert the Bruce grants Kames to the Bannatyne's who had proven their loyalty to his cause and fought in the victory over the English.
1812 ~ Sir William Macleod Bannatyne, a distinguished lawyer and judge in Edinburgh, loses his fortune and is forced to sell Kames.
James Hamilton purchases Kames Castle.
