Carleton Castle is a ruined five story 15th century tower house which can be seen from the coast road far below, with spectacular views out across the bay below.

The tower is located on private farm land where permission will need to be sought to gain access to the ruin.

1570 ~ John Cathcart is recorded as being the owner of the castle.

1707 ~ Sir Hugh Cathcart is the owner of the castle.

~ Legend ~

The ghost of Sir John Cathcart is said to haunt the castle. During his eventful life he married several women, murdering each in turn after securing their dowry.

However, his final wife, Mary Kennedy of Culzean, realising what was also going to happen to her, manages to push Sir John to his death over the cliff edge.
