Cumstoun Castle is a ruined 16th century tower house, formerly of four storeys with an attic. The castle was built and held by the Kennedy's before later passing to the MacLellan's. In the 19th century the castle was replaced by a Gothic Mansion which was built by the Maitland family who still own both house and castle.
The tower is located on a small mound surrounded and hidden by trees close to the mansion.

1590 ~ The castle passes to the MacLellan's before it passes to the Montgomery's five years later, then later to the Dunbar's.
1705 ~ The Hamilton's of Baldoon become the new owners of the castle.
1715 ~ Basil Hamilton is captured after taking part in the Jacobite uprising at the Battle of Preston.
1716 ~ Basil is sentanced to death, his lands forfeit to teh Crown. However, through the influence of his uncle Lord Orkney, his life is spared.
1733 ~ The Hamilton's successfully recover their estates.
1739 ~ Following his own experience in the last Jacobite uprising he advises disaffected lairds against a further uprising.
1741 ~ Basil Hamilton returns to Parliament for Kirkudbright but dies the following year.
1802 ~ The Maitlands of Dundrennan purchase the castle.
1828 ~ Cumstoun House is bult to replace the castle which gradually falls into ruin.
